“Virtual” Water Use

When you think about using less water, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Most people immediately consider shorter showers, turning off the lawn sprinkler, or shutting off the faucet while they’re brushing their teeth.

Cutting back on water use at home IS important, but your total water consumption is much larger than what comes out of your tap.

For example, have you considered how much water it took to raise the beef in the cheeseburger you ate for lunch? Or to cool the thermoelectric power plant that produces the electricity for your home? Make these connections, and you’ll quickly see that food and energy waste equal water waste.
